Candles and Carols

Dim the lights, light the candles, Winter is here!

The glow of candles warms the heart as the angelic sound of children's voices uplift the spirit. Cantaré Children's Choir presents its most cherished concert of the year. Join Cantilena, Cantiga, and Cantare as they share treasured carols and newly composed works to bring the cheer of Christmas and the solace of winter to you. This performance is accompanied by a professional string ensemble, with Cantare sharing favorite selections from their recent performances of "Rune's Christmas" with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra.

11 Days of Remembrance at the Field of Crosses

The Field of Crosses Memorial Project is an annual display of white crosses on Memorial Drive in Calgary, Alberta.  The display commemorates soldiers from Southern Alberta who lost their lives in service to our country in war and peacekeeping.  Over 3500 crosses are placed in the memorial park from November 1 – 11 to signify the ultimate sacrifice so many made fighting for the freedoms we enjoy today.  The project began in 2009.

Cantare children's choir has been a long time partner of the Field of Crosses. The children sing at the Remembrance Day ceremony, the Night of Lights Ceremony, as well as providing music for sunrise and sunset services throughout the 11 day period the crosses are standing. We undertake great efforts to teach our choristers about the history and significance of Canada's contribution in war and peace, we wish to make sure the children who perform at the ceremony are entrusted with the responsibility to keep the stories and memories of these soldiers alive forever.

Our First Concert!

The weather warmed, the sun glistened, THE CHILDREN SANG!

It was a thrilling weekend for the entire Cantare Children’s Choir family as we presented our first-ever LAWN CHAIR LISTEN!! This was a private outdoor performance for our choristers and their families to share the music that they have been working on since August, before we shift our focus to Remembrance Day and the winter holidays.

The first concert of the year is always a major steppingstone. Experiencing the excitement of presenting their hard work and receiving supportive and encouraging feedback from the audience is a great motivation to continue to learn and grow. For many of our choristers, this was their FIRST CONCERT EVER! We want to congratulate these choristers for their bravery and enthusiasm taking the stage – We could see the excitement on your faces, and we know there will be so many exciting moments still to come!

It was so important to us that our first public performance in 22 months could be for our families and that we could celebrate this incredible community that has come together to share experiences, enthusiasm, and encouragement through years of trying times. We want to say an enormous THANK YOU to all our parents, choristers, and our entire artistic team who made this magical day possible!

Our song goes on!

Have a Wonderful Summer, Cantare!

Last night we said a fond farewell to our senior Cantare choristers for the summer at our drive-by music return. We haven’t seen these smiling faces in person since November 2020 and we had SO MUCH TO TALK ABOUT!

We talked about highlights: Singing outside together in the warmth of the sunset, wiggling our toes to keep warm in the biting cold of the Field of Crosses, diving deep into ancient canons in musicianship classes online, coming together to learn about our nation and finding many new ways to learn to be agents of change in the world.

We also talked about hardships, struggles, and fears. You stood up to them with your head held high. We are so proud of how you grew out of them. But mostly, we just talked about love, friendship, and community. We heard about how ZOOM rehearsals, musicianship class, and small group gatherings were the highlights of your week. We learned all the ways you have supported each other throughout the year. We saw once again just how strongly the spirit of music rings out inside each of you. We are so incredibly proud of each of you and all that you have become.

For some of you, it is off to new adventures – perhaps a move to high school or university! Your Cantare family will always be here to support you and cheer on your next journey, wherever it leads you. For others, many brand-new adventures await right here! We will be ready with new music soon and some very open arms to welcome you back with a song!

HAVE A WONDERFUL SUMMER!! We will miss you

PSA: We also got to see some brand-new drivers! Stay safe out there
