Cantaré is a shining star among children’s choirs. Repertoire, vocalism, education, and spirit - Cantaré has it all. Any composer would be thrilled to have his music sung by Cantaré and taught by Catherine Glaser-Climie!
— Lee R. Kesselman, composer and conductor

Who could out-perform this amazing group of choirs that performed 18 pieces within a few days, consistently at the highest levels of artistry – technically, musically and emotionally?!
— Elroy Friesen, Professor of Music, University of Manitoba and Festival adjudicator

Since first working with Cantaré Children’s Choir in Dublin, Ireland in 2002 I have been enchanted, moved and delighted by the artistry and spirit that this wonderful choir and their amazing music director have brought to the many works of mine that they have performed, and to everything else that they do. Vive la Cantare!
— Daniel Brewbaker, composer
Thank you so much for being an important part of the Requiem and for playing that part so spectacularly well. I had never composed music for children’s choir before and I was more than a little nervous! But you showed me I had nothing to worry about. I think I could have written anything and you would have responded with “Yeah, okay, no problem”. It was so great to work with you and to discover that my music was in such great hands. And you had the hardest part: you had to be birds AND sing in three different languages, one of which I bet none of you had ever heard before! Well done, everyone!
— Jeffrey Ryan, composer following Cantaré's world premiere performance of Afghanistan: Requiem for a Generation (November 2012)

Parents

Catherine is truly magical. The way she works with children is a wonder to watch. As a parent, I watched my girls learn more music theory in one year than I learned in years of piano lessons. The confidence that is being built in my introverted child is wonderful. This group of talented staff has also been very quick to pivot with the challenges of Covid. From super safe in person rehearsals (with air purifiers, well spaced rehearsal spaces and time to disinfect the spaces between groups) to smooth transition online and elevating their zoom game with professional camera and sound gear, picture-in-picture shooting and constant growth. A company I can be proud to be affiliated with!
— Stacey Kotlar, Parent
Through our daughter’s participation in Cantaré, she has had the opportunity to cast a light on her innate musical and vocal ability. In the process, she has learned the virtues of team play, organization, self-discipline and commitment. Above all, she has made many great friends with equally motivated kids just like her. It has been a great adventure.
— Dale and Cathy Ens, parents
My children are benefiting from this programme in so many ways - they are gaining great confidence performing for such large audiences, learning to read music, as well as getting exposure to a variety of musical genres. You know this programme is good when so many of the older children have remained with Cantaré for years!
— Beth Nilsen, parent
Cantaré Children’s Choir provided my daughters an unparalleled foundation for their music education. Besides a thoroughly professional and rewarding musical experience, my daughters developed relationships that I am confident will last a lifetime. THE CANTARE EXPERIENCE IS SO MUCH MORE THAN THE MUSIC!
— Richard Oppenheim, alumni parent
Cantaré Children’s Choir has been the foundation for fostering a lifelong love for music. It has enabled me to see the world through different eyes and find my path in life.
— Alicia A, alumni
To me the choir was the program which catapulted me into music. I have seen the most beautfiul places, been with the most amazing people and created music that touched every one with this group. I loved it.
— Teighan F., alumni
Invest in your child’s future! I find it difficult to quantify how important and positive being a part of Cantare has been in our lives. For almost two decades we have had the pleasure of watching the impact Catherine’s teaching has had on our three girls. This is so much more than learning to sing in a group. They learn music, history, culture, languages, diction, performing and much more. For me the most critical benefits help shape the young person’s character – self-confidence, maturity, communication, work ethic, teamwork. I highly recommend this organization!
— Damian Gillies, parent
Both my children have participated in Cantaré Children’s Choir programs from the time they were very young. I am so pleased with the quality of instruction, focus on teamwork and the many once in a lifetime opportunities to perform with other professionals and tour locally, regionally and internationally.
— Holly Hykawy, Parent
This is a phenomenal program. Both of my girls (one an introvert and one an extrovert) have thrived under Catherine’s instruction. The caliber of singing she can pull out of these children is out of this world and leaves me in tears every time they perform, truly world class. Not to mention the kids have so much fun while they’re learning! This choir has been such an unexpected gift to not only my girls but anyone lucky enough to hear the choir perform!
— Jill Rossier, Parent
The Cantare Children’s Choir is fantastic. Both of our daughters have the privilege of singing with the choir. They have been exposed to and have learned lovely choral music and historical context. It’s always a treat to hear them perform at their concerts. Our fondest experiences are Christmas concerts and watching our oldest daughter sing with the Children’s choir, the CPC and the CPO to the musical score of Lord of the Rings: Two Towers. These past 14 months have been less than ideal but Catherine Glaser-Climie and staff have gone above and beyond to make sure that all the choristers continue to experience the beauty of music with weekly Zoom rehearsals and they have been a silver lining to this hard year for our daughters.
— The Gerling Family
An amazing choir that is committed to promoting vocal education with fun spirit and passion. It is a well-organized team dedicated to nurturing a healthy environment for kid education with well-designed art classes. It is more than a choir.
— Lei Xiong, Parent
We love this place! Both of our kids have been in this choir for over three years now and they are very much to devote themselves to all the activities. This is one of the prestige Children’s choir in Canada and well known for its quality and achievements thru the years. Everyone is extremely friendly and knowledgeable, with a lot of attentions to all the kids. This is a place not only to get your kids to learn music, but also to make long time friends, learn important social skills, and gain self esteem and confidence thru all kinds of on stage performances. The kids would also get lots of opportunities to get involved with large production such as CPO or Calgary Opera. The program they developed is very symmetrical and they quickly adopted to the new online learning environment with very minimum disruptions to the learning. It is a great place to learn to sing and so much more to it!
— Wiley Wang, Parent
My son has been part of the Cantare family for 6 years - he has learned more about music, being part of a team and personal responsibility from Catherine than he would have in years of piano lessons. Where else can your child learn musicianship, experience performing (even with the CPO or Calgary Opera!) and make new friends for life all for the same price as piano lessons: a priceless investment in my son’s future.
— Susan Lunt, Parent
Cantare Children’s Choir has been an amazing experience for my little one, she’s been always really musical and interest in singing, and the way the lessons and rehearsals are delivered made her love it even more! Everyone is really helpful and really caring with the kids, and as a parent, I love the experience as well, their doors are always opened for volunteering and I love taking part in this experience with her and seeing how much she can learn and develop.
Even with COVID they delivered all the classes and the kids developed a lot, we were lucky to get some in-person rehearsals in the fall, and my girl just loved going there, it was her happy day during the week!
— Catarina Sanchez
I can’t say enough good things about Cantare. Catherine is truly a gift. The level of music education my kids receive at Cantare is second to none. We’ve only been involved for one year and most of it was forced to be online, but the girls still enjoyed it and can’t wait to get back to in-person singing. Calgary is lucky to have an organization as professional, disciplined, educational and most importantly fun as Cantare. Additionally, for anyone with kids in piano lessons, Cantare is a perfect compliment.
— Mitchell Stewart, Parent
Highly recommend Cantare! Students learn superb musicianship and vocal performance under Catherine’s masterful direction. Her passion and humor make for a very engaging teaching style for kids of all ages and ability levels.
The choir is a diverse community that works as a closely knit team. They also have the most organized and thoughtful staff you’ll ever encounter! Because of their professionalism and amazing sound, Cantare has the ongoing privilege of collaborating with high profile organizations such as Calgary Opera, CPO, Field of Crosses and many more. They have even sung for the Queen of England and traveled around the world! As parent volunteers, we’ve enjoyed friendship with the other parents and have witnessed kids gain poise, skill and confidence beyond their years. Thankful to be a part of it!
— Jennifer Deboer, Parent
I have been involved with the Cantaré family since its inception in 1997, as a parent and a volunteer . Cantaré Childrens Choir provides a meaningful experience for children unlike any other. Catherine infuses her teaching of diverse and challenging musical education and repertoire with her passion for humanity and history. And along the journey, lifelong skills, friendships and memories are made . Pure magic!
— Brenda Reid, Parent
My daughter has been part of Cantare Children’s Choir for the past ten years. I am having difficulties expressing in words my gratitude for the unbelievable musical education and experiences that she has been provided with. I wholeheartedly recommend Cantare to anyone. Thanks for the great time...and the fabulous memories.
— Mona O'Connor
Cantare Choir has been a fantastic experience for my son, this year was his first year with Cantare and he enjoys the rehearsals, it is amazing how his music knowledge has grown just in one year. Cantare Choir team is kind, courteous, and always willing to help. Highly recommended for someone who really wants to be part of a high-quality choir.
— Gisell Garcia

Our Choristers

This choir has done absolute wonders for me. I’ve been affiliated with them for around 10 years, and Catherine Glaser-Climie (The Artistic Director) never ceases to amaze me on the challenges and new opportunities she provides us choristers. Personally I’ve been in 2 operas, many performances with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Lord of the rings in concert, and much more. The vocal training that is provided and practiced in this choir is absolutely exceptional. There is a large range of music sung, from Bach to the Beetles. I always enjoy coming to choir on Wednesday nights. Its a place to be yourself, and feel welcomed to do so. Even during a global pandemic, the choir is going strong with practicing and trying to give its choristers some sense of normality, being able to sing together if not all together in the same place. I’m not sure where I would be now if I didn’t have Cantare Children’s Choir in my life. I am eternally grateful for it. Thank you Catherine for everything you do, and your amazing team in the office. Much love!!!
— Kierra, Chorister
I’m a proud chorister of Cantare Children’s Choir. I joined CCC in the middle of 2018 and I was so nervous. I quickly learned that this was a welcoming environment and everyone was here to learn. I was in awe when I heard all of the incredible programs and events that Cantare had been a part of and all of the things they had planned for the future. Catherine is the most dedicated and inspiring person you will ever meet and her credentials are incredible. You truly are learning from the best when you join Cantare. The rest of the staff is also incredibly talented and their only goal is to nurture you and your singing career. Each and every singer in the choir is different and unique but we are all brought together by our mutual love of music. I have learned more from Cantare Children’s Choir than I have in my 6 years of voice lessons. The skills you develop in musicianship classes and average rehearsals are things you would have looked at before joining the choir and thought that there was no way anyone could understand what was going on. Unlike other choirs, Cantare does not just focus on the vocal part of singing, we focus on posture and exercise and what we can be doing in our spare time to achieve our singing goals. I am so thankful that the choir team does not see us as just another student or a number. They are invested in your success and give you all the tools you could ever need to do so. Cantare Children’s Choir is a place to grow, laugh and learn.
— Natasha, Chorister
I cannot say enough about this choir. I have been part of Cantare Children’s Choir for about 5 years and it has changed my life for the better. Each week we learn something new from our brilliant, creative, kind, thoughtful, smart director and our behind the scenes team is amazing. The vocal training is exceptional and I’ve learned so much about music and my passion for people and music has only grown since I joined. Being part of Cantare opens all sorts of once in a lifetime opportunities including being part of an opera (sometimes two or three), singing with Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, singing with other professional choirs everywhere and just travelling the world. I myself have been in an opera, sung with CPO dozens of times, sung the Lord of the Rings soundtrack, traveled all over Alberta and so many other things all in the span of 2-3 years. Retreats each season are always fun, where we make huge leaps in our learning and progress during the year, build and solidify friendships (really its a family), eat delicious meals and explore the woods and the river. Workshops on the weekends are filled with learning, games, singing, history, yoga, and sometimes even dancing. Aside from all of the experiences, opportunities, friendships and boatloads of learning and knowledge Cantare provides, Cantare has a general attitude of, and aspires to be a place of professionalism, discipline, hard work, family, friendship, respect, creativity and independence. I think that that is part of the reason Cantare is doing so well during Covid- because we are determined to keep working and learning. Going online for choir is not an easy thing to do but the Cantare team is making it happen, and we are still learning a lot. Cantare is a lifestyle I would highly recommend.
— Sydney, Chorister
I am currently a part of Cantare and have been for a long time. Most of my childhood memories have come from the amazing experiences and opportunities that Cantare has provided me with! I have learnt so many important musical skills as well as life skills. Being in Cantare not only built my self esteem and confidence as a musician but also as a teenager. Thanks to Cantare I now have a very strong work ethic. Each year Cantare chooses phenomenal repertoire for our concerts. At the end of the year we then get to go on a tour and make some long lasting memories. A few years ago we got to go to New Orleans where we performed in a festival. We got to learn and experience the rich musical history and culture of New Orleans and where some of the worlds most recognizable jazz artists preformed. Throughout the year we get to go on retreats where we work hard on our music and enjoy being outdoors. I am so grateful that I am a part of Cantare and am a part of the lifelong Cantare family.
— Sophia, Chorister
From a perspective of someone who has been a part of the choir since I was six years old, I can safely say that being in Cantare is and amazing experience. Being in this choir has provided me with fantastic opportunities (like singing with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, and being in multiple operas) that I would not have had otherwise, and with so many friends and memories. Being a part of the choir and Catherine have taught me so much, and I wouldn’t be where I am musically without them. With COVID, the transitions between in-person and online have been seamless and rehearsals are easy to follow whether we are gathering together or on zoom. Needless to say, I am proud to be in Cantare Children’s choir and hope for many more years to come in this amazing program and group of people.
— Amy, Chorister
I’ve been in this choir for 6 years, and I’m not exaggerating when I say that these have been the best 6 years of my life. This choir is passionate, fun, and a wonderful learning space. I’ve also had so many opportunities presented to me through this choir and I’m incredibly grateful for that. Honestly, joining Cantare was one of the best decisions I ever made
— Selina, Chorister
This is not just a business but really a place where people can connect with others similar and with differences with a massive smile on their face. All the staff puts in enormous hours to bring the choristers’ experience to the next level. The choristers can be themselves and really fit into the community without being embarrassed or afraid.
— Elijah
I have been a member of Cantaré Children’s Choir from when I was 6 to graduating high school, and it was a fantastic experience throughout! I made lifelong friends and developed a depthful skill and love of music. The quality of musicianship is truly excellent, and I was given many opportunities to perform around Alberta and in Europe, with the CPO and in opera. I recommend this choir from the bottom of my heart!
— Zoe, Chorister

Our Alumni

Being a member of Cantare Children’s Choir has been the best experience of my lifetime, to date. Not only did I gain a profound knowledge of musical skills, but about history, political and philosophical thought, and what it means to be a young musician in today’s reality. Cantare is like a family to me and always will be. The travel opportunities, lifelong friends, and personal growth will always be close to my heart. I could not recommend Cantare enough - it will be the best choice you could make for your family.
— Marley Gillies, Alumni
As an Alumni and now as a parent of a chorister, I can’t say enough about how this program positively impacted my life. Catherine and the entire Cantare staff operate in the most professional and organized way, always striving to be the best in class in everything they do. The musicianship development, performing opportunities, and fun times singing together fosters personal growth, confidence and lifelong friendships among its singers!
— Holly Swinton, Alumni-Parent
I was so lucky to get to grow up with my Cantare family. I was a member of the choir for 11 years and had the privilege of touring many different places, getting to be a part of some amazing performances and learnt so much about the world, history, music and life. Cantare is an incredible organization that would be a wonderful opportunity for any child!
— Katelyn Gillies
